Our communities are feeling the effects of rising fossil fuel prices. It is something that affects all of us, but in rural areas we often have a greater reliance on private cars and heating oil and so it hits us harder. We must face the economic realities of our reliance on fossil energy and accept that we must start to do things differently.
Many believe that it will be expensive to make the shift to renewable fuels – but it will soon be even more expensive to persist with them. The Green Valleys believe that we can harness the potential of our landscape and tap into new sources of energy. This change provides a fantastic opportunity for communities to generate energy themselves, retaining and reinvesting the income that would otherwise disappear from our rural communities through our utility bills and at the filling station. This income can then be reinvested in other community projects and used to support community resources and services.
Much of the landscape of Wales is ideally suited to the generation of hydro electricity by tapping into the energy of our steep upland streams and the water holding capacity of our peat soils. Recognising this potential led The Green valleys to set up a subsidiary company, TGVHydro Ltd. that can design, fund and build hydro schemes for both community groups and individuals.
Harvesting wood fuels through sustainable woodland management can also provide a local fuel source. Find more information on our woodlands page.
Solar energy, Heat Pumps, insulation and energy efficiency
Modern solar technology can generate energy even in Wales where we are not known for our sunshine! Insulating your home effectively helps save energy, as does making your electricity supply more efficient through a process known as voltage optimization. Our friends at Llangattock Green Valleys through the Reach For The Renewables offering have developed expertise in delivering these services to communities and individuals.
