Earlier this year in February, we pruned the apple trees at Bronllys Hospital Orchard and Mardy Park Resource Centre in Abergavenny. We really pruned hard – taking a lot of the congested branches and some really big ones out too. The trees at both sites were really struggling, after being left unmanaged for decades. However, all of the apple trees truly honoured our hard work by producing a bumper crop of juicy apples. It was so rewarding to see the trees benefit from the pruning work.
As well as pruning apple trees this year, as usual The Green Valleys held several juicing events, in Brecon Farmers Market, Abergavenny Community Centre, Talgarth Mill and Hay On Wye Thursday Market – a new venue for us.
And thanks to BBNP’s Sustainable Development Fund, we have essential new kit too! We were awarded a grant for 2 new pasteurisers, a pruning ladder, saws and apple pickers.
The pasteurisers complete our juicing kit so that community groups can now pick, scrat, juice and preserve all of their community apples – and the juice will last up to 24 months!
With our new pruning kit we can welcome lots more volunteers to come and help us restore these local orchards, and learn how to prune too… If you are interested in helping out, please get in touch CharlieS@thegreenvalleys.org or call on 07967343619.
