Skyline Caerau
Caerau Skyline, is funded by the Welsh Governmenet Rural Communities – Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the Welsh Government and European Union and runs from late 2021 to spring 2023. This project is situated on Coal Authority and NRW (Natural Resource Wales) land behind Blaencaerau Estate in Bridgend. Working alongside Invest Local Caerau, local community groups and the community of Caerau, we plan to develop the land for the needs of the community utilising the existing forestry and land.
Following on from the feasibility study 2019, the community has envisioned ideas for the land use including making the area accessible to all the community by making the land more accessible to people with physical disabilities, and creating walking routes and rest stops for the community to enjoy the views from the hillside. Along with encouraging growth of indiginoues plants and encouragement of pollination through beehives.
Caerau skyline is in the early stages of development but ideas by the community seek to create an income for the area and help sustain the project’s longevity and sustainability. This could include the creation of a dedicated area for a pumpkin patch, an autumn food festival, the growing of fruit and vegetables and a children’s playground.
At present, there is a small steering group helping to shape the future plans of Skyline Caerau. The inclusion of the whole community is vital to the success of Caerau Skyline to give everyone the opportunity to decide on what is needed for the area and how it is to be maintained. We will be working closely with NRW to maintain the forestry and beauty of the area and expand community relations, engagement with local businesses, charities and organisations.
